SEPTEMBER

Here we are at the last month of the bowling season. It has all gone so quick. There are still a few finals to be played but a resume of last month’s games etc

Thankfully the weather improved and had mostly sunny days for the various events. Firstly there was the Nellie Hastie Triples- 30 Ladies played and was enjoyed by all. We also had friendlies between Carrick Knowe, Goldenacre and a mixed match against Trinity. It is always good to have these games as it keeps us in touch with the other Clubs and gives us a chance to catch up with old friends. Unfortunately the friendly with Coltbridge was cancelled due to the fact that they could’nt get a team due to lack of players. It is when we hear news like this that we realise how lucky we are at Blackhall to have such a large number of lady members. We will also be welcoming Corstorphine ladies next week.

We had a single, pairs, triple and rink entered in the EWBA championship. The pairs got through to the quarter finals but unfortunately all are now out of all competitions.

As explained last month this year’s Charity was ‘Hopscotch’ and two ladies from the charity came along to explain their work with children who do not get the opportunity to have a holiday and take them away for 5 days to the house on the west coast of Scotland for a few days of fun and laughter. The total raised was £610 which was a wonderful sum and we must also thank the Gents who also contributed to this.

There have been many days in August when 2 or 3 rinks daily were taken up by ladies playing various ties but most of the competitions are nearing completion and finals are being arranged. Our normal Wednesday afternoon bowls will continue until 24th September which will be the Ladies Closing Day.

There are also the Autumn Pairs and Anderson Cup which are all mixed competitions this month.

Our Social event in August was an Elvis Presley Tribute singer which by the singing and dancing was a great success. Our Annual Race Night will be held on 5th October. This is the main fund raiser for the Club so please come along and support it. It has also been suggested that a ‘Beginners Bridge Club’ might be started in the Club on a Thursday afternoon under the direction of Willie Deas. This would start in October. If you might be interested add your name to the Form which will be on the notice board and we can ascertain how many would come along.

We have a full bus of 33 going to Pitlochry on 27th September for a day at the Theatre to see ‘Blonde Bombshells of 1940’ followed by High Tea. I am quite sure there will be a lot of singing on the way home!

28th September will be Closing Day for the Club . There will be the usual game of Bowls followed by a catered meal. The meal will be subsidised by the Club and the cost to members will be £5 per head. It is always good to finish off the season on a high note.

Our monthly Coffee mornings will resume in October. Also Ladies Dinner and Prizegiving is on Wednesday 23rd October in Bruntsfield Golf Club.
